SOUTH AFRICA - Although about 30 airlines fly to South Africa, it still isn't a hub of international travel and the fares reflect that. Johannesburg remains the main international airport, but there are an increasing number of flights to Cape Town and a few to Durban. There's an airport departure tax of 6.00 for domestic flights, 10.00 for flights to regional (African) countries and 30.00 for other international flights. The tax is usually included in the ticket price.

Lesotho's only international airport, Moshoeshoe I, is 18km S of Maseru. The only scheduled flights are daily to Johannesburg with SA Airlink (Tel: 011/978 1111).

South African Airways flies daily between Moshoeshoe Intl (18km SE of Maseru) and Johannesburg.

There are no direct buses between major South African cities and Maseru. One has to take a bus to Bloemfontein or Ladybrand and catch a minibus taxi from there. Minibus taxis run between Jo'burg and Maseru. Buses from Maseru for South African destinations leave from the bridge on the South African side of the border.
Hire cars are a popular option in South Africa and, if organised at the time of hire, can freely be driven in Lesotho.
Entry via Sani Pass is only possible with a 4WD. If you're adventurous, you can leave Lesotho by that route (you might feel you're in free-fall some of the way). There is a road tax for everyone leaving Lesotho, set at a whopping 0.40 (who cares which currency!).

GETTING TO/FROM LESOTHO
There are 14 border posts from South Africa into Lesotho - from the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. All the Free State border crossings, and Tele Bridge (daily 6am-10pm) in the Eastern Cape, cross over into the Lesotho lowlands and are much more accessible than the others, which enter via the Drakensberg.
The latter include the famous Sani Pass (daily 8am-4pm), which requires a 4WD, although alternative transport is provided by local backpackers' lodges. The Ficksburg Bridge and Maseru Bridge crossings (both 24hr), are the busiest in the country.

The drive from Bloemfontein to Maseru is an easy 200km east along the N8. From Durban, turn off towards Ficksburg at Bethlehem, and then either cross the border at Maputsoe and drive down through Lesotho, or continue on to Ladybrand and cross the border at Maseru. Driving from the Eastern Cape to Maseru is more fiddly, and if you want to stay on tarred roads for as long as possible, remain in South Africa at least until Wepener, from where you can cross into Mafeteng through the Van Rooyen's Gate border post (daily 6am-10pm), or continue through Hobhouse on the Ladybrand road, taking the right-hand fork to Maseru.

You can enter overland from all of Botswana's neighbours. The Trans-Namib bus runs between Ghanzi and Gobabis (Namibia). Buses and Minibuses run between Gaborone and Johannesburg. Buses to Zimbabwe include the Gaborone to Francistown, Bulawayo and Harare service and the Kasane to Victoria Falls service. The bus line between Livingstone (Zambia), Victoria Falls and Windhoek passes through Kasane.

To get to Zambia otherwise, you need to catch the Kazunguka ferry over the Zambezi River.

Most international flights arrive in Harare. If you're in southern Africa, there are frequent services between Johannesburg (and plenty of other Southern African cities) and Harare and Bulawayo in Zimbabwe. Air Zimbabwe offers services throughout regional Africa and to major cities in Europe.
Currently, Air Zimbabwe only connects Harare and Bulawayo and Harare with Victoria Falls due to lack of demand and fuel. Sometimes, combined flight and accommodation deals are available for the price of the air ticket, so it's worth making inquiries.

Popular land borders include the Victoria Falls/Kazungala crossing between Zimbabwe and Botswana (from where you can continue through Chobe National Park to Namibia), the Victoria Falls/Livingstone crossing to Zambia, and the road and rail links to South Africa via Beitbridge. To Mozambique (and Malawi), the route is from Harare to Blantyre via the Nyamapanda and Mwanza border crossings. Daily buses run this route.
There are 'express' and 'local' buses. Most foreigners use scheduled express coaches to travel between major tourist spots, but the local buses are often just as quick and cheaper. There aren't any schedules for local buses and they run only from early morning to late afternoon, departing from the 'African township' bus stations, which are never in the town centre. It's also quite common to strike a deal with a truck driver for intercity transport.
Zimbabwe's railway network connects Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare and Victoria Falls. Trains are very slow, and not particularly safe. All major services travel at night, and sleeping compartments with bedding are available but watch your belongings.
There is a ferry service on Lake Kariba, connecting Kariba with Mlibizi, which is handy if you want to do a circular tour of Zimbabwe without retracing your steps between Victoria Falls and Bulawayo. The ferry departs when there is sufficient demand.
Car rental in Zimbabwe is expensive, especially 4WD, and the vehicles are not generally well-maintained.
Cyclists will be happy to know that most roads are surfaced and in fair repair, and winds are rarely strong enough to make cycling difficult. Although distances between towns are long by European standards, they're generally only a day's ride apart and there are plenty of small stores between towns where you can stop for refreshment.

If you're arriving from Tanzania, LAM flies from Dar es Salaam to Maputo, and from Mtwara (in southern Tanzania) to the town of Pemba (N Mozambique), avoiding the adventurous land border crossing. The airport departure tax for international flights is 20.00.

Many tourists fly directly to Victoria Falls. Lusaka Airport is 20km E of the centre. There's no airport bus, but taxis and hotel courtesy vans meet international flights.

The most fabulous way of entering Zambia by road is over the Victoria Falls Bridge from Zimbabwe. The main route between Lusaka and Bulawayo, from where you can reach Harare, crosses the border here. The other main border points with Zimbabwe are Chirundu and Kariba, where you cross between Zambia and Zimbawe over the massive Kariba Dam.
From Malawi, the main crossing point is east of Chipata, on the main road between Lusaka and Lilongwe.

The only crossing point between Zambia and Botswana is the ferry across the Zambezi River at Kazungula, about 60km W of Victoria Falls.

From Namibia, buses run from Windhoek to the Namibian outpost town of Katima Mulilo. From here you can cross the border into Zambia, go over the Zambezi on a ferry, then go via Sesheke to Livingstone. An easier option from Katima Mulilo is the bus, which runs through Botswana to Victoria Falls in Zimbawe, from where you can easily cross the border to Zambia.

Even when two airlines serve the same route, fares are pretty much the same. BA flies between Lilongwe and London once a week. The Malawian ferry Ilala runs twice a week between Likoma Island and Cobuè, Mozambique. The train is the best way to get between Malawi and northern Mozambique. There are twice-weekly trains between Nampula and Cuamba. Crossing other points of the Malawian border will involve a bus, a car or feet.
If you're heading for southern Mozambique, there are buses between Mwanza and Zóbuè. Other bus routes between Malawi and Mozambique include Nsanje and Villa de Sena, just south of the Zambezi River, and Chiponde and Mandimba.
The only land crossing between Malawi and Tanzania is at the Songwe River bridge north of Kaporo, in the far NW tip of Malawi. Buses make the run twice a day. The main crossing point between Malawi and Zambia is about 30km (20mi) east of Chipata, on the main road between Lilongwe and Lusaka. All crossing points on the Malawi border are open roughly from 06:00 to 18:00.

THE SCATTERED ISLANDS (France) in the Western Indian Ocean includes the islands of Europa, the Glorioso Islands, Juan de Nova and Bassas da India and Tromelin . They ard administered by the French Overseas Territory - La Reunion and are scattered around Madagascar

-Mayotte is disputed and claimed by Madagascar but attributed to France and included as separate state above.

The islands that prompted a posting at the Yahoogroup Islands-Countries were the Glorioso Islands
These comprise Ile Glorieuse, Ile du Lys, Verte Rocks, Wreck Rock, South Rock and and a sandbank which is more or less exposed at low tide and are a whole 5 sq km in size. Les Iles are French territory and are located off Southern Africa northwest of Madagascar (which claims them also)
There are no inhabitants (despite the natural resources of guano and coconuts) apart from a French military garrison (if it is still there and if it is still manned) and a meteorological station. Administration is the responsibility of La Reunion (on the other side of Madagascar).
The highest point is 12m but unnamed as is the one and only airstrip (Glorious Intl Airport would be a nice name actually).
