Golf has been played on the Island since 1891 when the first course was laid out and opened at Ramsey. This was followed within months by the first course in the capital Douglas. There are now 8 affiliated Clubs within the IOMGU and each of them are located in areas of stunning views and scenery. Links, Parkland or Heath golf awaits the golfing visitor to our Island – and a very friendly Manx welcome too!
Castletown Golf Club - A fine links course. Strong challenge on the Langness Peninsular and the sea ever present. Castletown is one of the few links courses in the UK that is fortunate to boast views of the sea from every hole. The final three bring you in alongside the Irish Sea with the 17th offering a tee shot over the sea that is not for the faint hearted (or a windy day from NW)!
Douglas Golf Club, Pulrose (Municipal) - Course layout influenced by Alistair McKensie (architect of Augusta National), blending a mixture of long and short undulating holes, Douglas is a fitting course for all standards of golfer. Visiting golfers have a good chance of putting a score together as the frequent number of par threes can make this a rewarding game. The 17th sees you tee up from an elevated tee (pulpit) playing your shot towards a green that is 200 feet below. Unquestionably, this is a gem of a hole and one of the best on the island. Moderate fees and exciting course.
King Edward Bay - Perched on Onchan Head just outside Douglas this challenging hilltop and heath course has views to die for. An excellent Clubhouse and restaurant facility complements a days golf here. Pay attention to the Stroke Saver and local knowledge is always helpful.
Mount Murray Country Club - Set in 200 acres of stunning Manx countryside a 10 min drive of the airport and Douglas lies Mount Murray Hotel and Country Club. Hosting the Isle of Man Championships in 2004, it comprises spectacular views, well looked after contoured fairways and lush greens. Whilst not the most exciting course to look at, at 6'332 yds it is a challenge for all golfers and certainly one to relish.
Peel Golf Club - James Braid designed Peel golf course is the stream which runs through the third, fourth, 16th, 17th and finally back to the 18th. It adds more character to an already interesting layout and adds challenge where it comes into play. A fine inland course including a blind tee off shot.
Port St. Mary (9) - Founded in 1803, Port St Mary is the only 9 hole course on the Island. The sixth tee offers what is widely thought to be the best panoramic view of Mann. Superb restaurant/tearoom.
Ramsey Golf Club - is justly proud of both its history and its course. Founded in 1891 with James Braid involved in its design, the first six and the last two holes are over undulating grounds divided by a brook, while the remaining ten are set in wooded parkland against a backdrop of beautiful scenery. The par five first is a real challenge, especially if you are playing into the wind. A fine modern clubhouse complements the experience. A very beautiful parkland course within a mile of the sea.
Rowany Golf Club - A most interesting and challenging course in the south of the island at Port Erin. After relatively straightforward opening holes the course begins to ask questions of golfers of all abilities. Elevated tees, dog-legs around gorse banks, stands of trees, the sea ever present in the background, an interesting days golf is assured. Don't forget to greet the "fairies" at their tower at the back end of the 4th.
Glen Truan GC, Ballaskilley Farm, Bride with lovely view of Scotland
The newest 9th Isle of Man golf course is Glentruan GC nr Bride and the Ayres in the north of the island location map. This 18-hole gorse/heather links is 6454yds gents and 5676yds ladies and presently also available for pay-and-play at GBP 13.50 weekdays/GBP 16 weekends. - KIRK ANDREAS The Grosvenor Hotel. The only eatery in the northern part of the island. Excellent Sunday roast. Ted or Maureen will look after you up here. Worth the drive Tel: 880 576.
- LAXEY The Mines Tavern in Laxey (861 484) is both quaint, has a great pub and a nice restaurant section with good pub food. This one should be on your "must see" list.
If its only a tea, ice-cream or toasted teacake that you need whilst waiting for the Snaefell, Douglas or Ramsey tram, then Laxey Railway Station Cafe meets all your needs (seasonal)
- KIRK MICHAEL The MITRE (878 244) is the only pub in the village and some of the best value meals on the island. Popular biker stop and one that we visit frequently.

- DOUGLAS
-Try the Bar George (617 799) if you like wine and "nibbles". Not the place in rush hour if you are touchy about noise. We still frequent this bar the most.
- Alessandro's Pizzeria (626 003) at 13 Castle St (nr Strand Centre) is open from midday until 21.30 all week and will spoil you with Italian cuisine and Italy's national beer - Nastro Azzuro.

- DERBYHAVEN Apart from the fine restaurant in Castletown Golf Links Hotel (822 201), we generally turn L in Derbyhaven and settle for a drink at "The Church" (Manx Flyers Aero Club) (825 999) which is located at the end of the road and the beginning of a runway and is thus popular with the airplane spotters.
- GANSEY The Shore Hotel , Shore Rd, Gansey (832 269) is a pub and restaurant that we often visit. Great location, beer and meals.
- PORT ST MARY My birthday parties are celebrated at Mike Tattersall's The Port (832 064). Try out also The Bay View (832 234) and the PSM Golf Club's Pavillion (834 932) Open 7 days a week.
- PORT ERIN The best deal meal is at THE BAY on the lower promenade (Shore Rd). Open 1200-1400 and 18.00-20.00. Great meals from £5-£14. Jimmy McGuire is manager and Ian & Kevin cook so that you'll be back. Tel/Fax 832 084 thebayporterin@manx.net The Falcon's Nest (834 077) is also popular and does a nice dressed crab.
