Discovery - Czech Low Cost Airline A relatively little-known Czech airline which operates low fare routes from Geneva and Sion to Prague on a yield management basis for a cheapest one-way price of €66 including taxes - about 102 Swiss Francs or 2081 Czech Koruna. That's more expensive than flying to Prague with Smart Wings but still cheaper than either helvetic or fly baboo.

Operates flights from its hub at Geneva to the Swiss town of Lugano, to Venice and Florence in Italy, Valencia in Spain and to Prague in the Czech Republic. Fly Baboo has a very stylish image, but for all that it can often compete on price with Switzerland's other principal budget operator, helvetic.

germanwings - German Low Cost Airline Flies from Zurich to Cologne-Bonn airport on the Rhineland in western Germany. germanwings regularly holds Crazy Night and Crazy Weekend promotions during which hundreds of extra one-way flights are sold at very low fares. However, even outside promotional periods, if you can find the cheapest Flight 4U tariff - 1 Swiss Franc before taxes - you can fly one-way from Zurich for the staggeringly low price of 29 Swiss Francs - just under €19.

helvetic - Swiss Low Cost Airline Another fixed price airline which operates out of Zurich. Even if you book at the last minute, helvetic will fly you from Zurich to destinations including London Gatwick, Prague, Barcelona, Rome, Madrid and Vienna for €132 including taxes. The Swiss budget carrier has also just introduced flights to two new Macedonian destinations, Skopje and Ohrid, for a fixed one-way price of €231 including taxes, though this seems like less of a bargain.

InterSky - Austrian Low Cost Airline Though an Austrian low fare airline, InterSky runs a couple of routes from Switzerland: from Bern to Berlin Tempelhof and Vienna. Fares start at 94 Swiss Francs including taxes to both the German and Austrian capitals.

Maersk Air - Danish Low Cost Airline Flies low cost routes from both Geneva and Zurich to Copenhagen in Denmark. Fares start at around 95 Swiss Francs, 455 Danish Kroner or €62 including taxes.
Maersk Air was a Danish low-fare airline, based in Copenhagen, which was part of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group. It operated from 1969 to 2005, when it was bought by Icelandic investment group Fons Eignarhaldsfélag and then merged with their other Danish acquisition the same year, Sterling European Airlines.
The new company changed name to Sterling Airlines and one month later it was sold to the Icelandic FL Group, which owns Icelandair as well as 16.8% of Europe's largest low-fare airline, easyJet. Sky Europe - Central European Low Cost Airline Operates connections from Zurich to Bratislava and Kosice in Slovakia. Low cost flights to the Slovakian capital start at around 84 Swiss Francs. For an additional 60 Swiss Francs you can take advantage of Sky Europe's Skylink service from Bratislava on to Kosice in eastern Slovakia.

Smart Wings - Czech Low Cost Airline Provides a simple low cost service from Zurich to Prague for which the cheapest one-way flights are available for 88 Swiss Francs or 1800 Czech Koruna including taxes - about €57. The cheapest way to fly to Prague from Switzerland without exception.

Virgin Express - Belgian Low Cost Airline Branson's low cost airline flies direct from Geneva to Brussels Zaventem International for a cheapest one-way fare of 62 Swiss Francs including taxes which equates to €41. There are no commercial airports in Liechtenstein. Access is by rail or road from Switzerland or Austria. Liechtenstein is in customs union and has no customs posts with Switzerland.

How to get there:
There are both train and bus transportation into Liechtenstein from Zurich. Many express trains pass through Liechtenstein, but none stop there. You can take a train from Zurich to Sargans or to Buchs in nearby Switzerland. Call tel. 0900-300300 for rail schedules. At both Sargans and Buchs you'll find good bus connections to Vaduz and other communes in Liechtenstein.
Driving from Zurich, head SW along N3 until you reach the junction with N1. Take N1 north for a couple of km to the turnoff for Vaduz.

Nearest commercial airport is Zurich and the one normally used to get to Liechtenstein and, indeed to get to the Austrian Vorarlberg.

Reduced speed limits are in force on the roads of Liechtenstein so that you don't miss it. Yet this small delightful and mountainous principality, squeezed between Austria and Switzerland, is better known to international bankers than tourists.
Visitors who do stop enjoy the natural beauty and the surprisingly vivid cultural scene of Liechtenstein. There is hiking in the mountains in summer, skiing in winter and wine tasting in autumn. The Prince's prime art collection, which is housed in a sleek modern museum, is worth a visit any time of year.
Liechtensteiners enjoy the highest per-capita income in all of Europe, and although they do depend on neighbouring Switzerland with whom they have a customs union and whose currency they use, they do love their sovereignty. The country is a stable democracy, yet its people have recently voted a few extra powers to the prince.
The capital (Vaduz) is a surprise to most visitors. It is small, but besides a quaint side, it is marked by modern architecture, banks and office buildings. Visitors will find relief from harsh lines in the picturesque medieval castle and the fact that the mountains are only a few minutes away.

The Rhine forms the border between Switzerland and Liechtenstein and the nearest important railway stations are Feldkirch (AUT) Buchs or Sargans (SUI). The nearest airport is Zurich Kloten which is about 130km or 1.5hrs drive away. (Info partially from Northstar Travel Media via Yahoo Travel)

What to visit there
Besides Vaduz and the Prince's castle, the seldom visited uplands are well worth a visit. From Triesen, head for Triesenberg then either Gaflei or even Malbun (winter playground). You will experience stunning alpine views. The roads are narrow but nevertheless two way roads. Lonely Planet Map and at Image Gallery. More images if you use Google.com and enter Leichtenstein and select Images Search instead of Search.
If spending a day or two in the region, on no account miss Feldkirch just over the Austrian border. This "little Vienna" of Western Austria comes complete with Vienese style coffee houses, covered shopping streets and a castle (A HREF="http://www.hak-feldkirch.ac.at/schattenburg/"> Schattenburg built 1230) over the main road which serves what must be the world's largest children's Wiener Schnitzel. Do try it. The "Gastwirtschaft" of this almost 800yr old castle is in the Knights' Hall and quite an experience with quite a view.

The Official Website has wonderful video pictures of the ever popular Rhein Valley hang-gliding. Don't miss the video about the "Princely House" and Hans-Adam II and Princess Marie and their family. Leaning very much towards Austrian when it comes to culture and gentry, Leichtenstein is nevertheless very Swiss when it comes to money and business.
This small principality often gets forgotten - "Liechtenstein discovered, to everyone's surprise, that it was one of the Allies in World War II, because it had never formally ended hostilities, as an ally of Austria, against Prussia in 1866." (www.friesian.com/deutsch.htm) - and often surprises by still having the same music as the British national anthem to this day. Switzerland also had the same music (but different words of course) until the mid 1960s

There are no trains on Madeira, taxis are expensive, and hire cars are often inconvenient, unavailable or dangerous (I spent a week in Funchal hospital with a broken sternum!). Cycling - forget it!
There are however 4 different bus companies that operate on Madeira:
Horários Do Funchal, covers the city of Funchal and nearby towns and villages.
Rodoeste, covers the island west of Funchal, up to the north west tip (red on map refered to)
SAM (Sociedade de Automóveis da Madeira), covers the east of the island up to the north east tip (black on the map).
The Airport Bus, but that just covers the route between Funchal and Madeira Airport.

From Spain, there are daily bus services from Málaga and Algeciras to the border town of La Línea de la Concepcion. From the bus station it is just a few minutes walk to the border. Various tour operators also run day trips from the Costa del Sol resorts to Gibraltar.
By car you take the Spanish N-340 and turn off at San Roque for La Línea. Unfortunately, lengthy queues can form for cars wishing to go onto and leave the Rock. It is often better to park your car in La Línea and walk across the frontier. It is a 15 min walk from the border into the centre of Gibraltar. To check queues at the border call Frontier Queue Information - Tel: 42777.
There are bus services to various parts of the Rock at the bus stop, on the Gibraltar side of the border, opposite the airport terminal entrance. There is also a taxi rank and Tourist Information Office. Gibraltar Taxi Association - Tel: 70027.

By Boat:
When the frontier was closed, there was a ferry service from Gibraltar to Morocco. Although there may be an occasional passenger service geared up to the Moroccan workers in Gibraltar, who have problems crossing the frontier, the Gibraltar ferry has ceased and the nearest service is from Algeciras in Spain. These ferries accommodate cars.

Air - The main airport for internal flights is Baneasa (travel time 20 minutes to Otopeni). Tarom (RO) operates regular services from there to Arad, Baia Mare, Cluj-Napoca, Constanta, Iasi, Oradea, Satu Mare, Sibiu, Suceava, Timisoara and Tirgu Mures.
River - The Danube Delta is easily explored by boat. Most trips and cruises depart from the ancient city of Tulcea and sail to Sulina.
Rail - Bucharests main station is the Gara de Nord on Calea Grivitei. Romanian State Railways (website: www.cfr.ro) runs frequent, efficient and cheap services to most cities, towns and larger villages, some with sleeping and restaurant cars. There are five different types of train, varying in speed from the slow personal to the faster accelerat, rapid and express trains, and the more expensive and comfortable Inter-City. Supplements are payable on rapid and express trains, for which seats must be reserved in advance. Express routes run from Bucharest to Timisoara, Cluj-Napoca, Iasi, Constanta and Brasov. Rail Inclusive Tour tickets include transport and hotel accommodation. There are no platforms of any great height in Romania, making entering and alighting a little difficult for the elderly or infirm. There is a discount of 25 to 35 per cent for non-express trains.
Road - Traffic drives on the right. The Romanian Automobile Club (ACR) has its headquarters in Bucharest (tel: (21) 212 8247 or 223 4525) and offers services through all its branches to AA and RAC members. Speed limits are 50kph (30mph) in cities, 60kph (37mph) in built-up areas, up to 90kph (57mph) on main roads and 120kph (75mph) on motorways. Driving under the influence of alcohol is forbidden. Coach: Local services operate to most towns and villages. The main coach stations in Bucharest are at 164 Soseaua Alexandriei, 1 Ion Ionescu de la Brad Boulevard, 1 Piata Grii Filarest, 221 Soseaua Chitilei, 141 Pacii Boulevard and 3 Gãrii Obor Boulevard. Taxi: Metered taxis can be hailed in the street or called from hotels. Prices are relatively low, but drivers expect a 10 per cent tip. Although most drivers are honest, prices should be agreed beforehand, especially at the airport. Car hire: Available at hotels and at Bucharest Airport. Driving is very erratic, so it might be advisable to hire a car with a driver. Documentation: National driving licence or International Driving Permit are required, as is Green Card insurance. Most Romanian roads are best suited to 4-wheel-drive vehicles as they are in poor, potholed condition.
Urban - Good public transport facilities are provided in the main centres. Bucharest has a good bus and tram system and a metro. Tickets are pre-purchased from agents, and there are stamping machines on board buses and trains. There are also daily, weekly and fortnightly passes. A separate minibus network is operated.

Road - The road network covers 13,622km. Busses: Run between most of the larger towns and cities. Fares should be negotiated in advance, though drivers prefer to charge per hour. Taxis are requested by calling 900 or 905-8. Carhire: Self-drive cars can be obtained for self-drive or with an English-speaking driver. Avis car hire is represented in Chisinau. Documentation: An International Driving Permit is required.
Urban - Buses, trolleybuses and minibuses are cheap but notoriously crowded and unreliable. They all operate from 0500-2400 with services every 15 minutes. Tickets for buses and trolleybuses can be purchased from kiosks or on board the vehicle. Minibus tickets are bought from the driver.

Air - Fuel shortages used to result in sharp reductions in flights within Ukraine and erratic timetables. However, the situation has improved recently. Air Ukraine's repainted Aeroflot aircraft are far from comfortable and buying tickets is extremely difficult and almost guaranteed to involve complicated negotiations with the local travel agencies. Pre-booking through Intourist Travel Ltd in London is advised (see Contact Addresses section). Winter weather frequently grounds aircraft. The most reliable flights are from Kyiv to Donetsk, Lviv and Odessa.

River - Cruises between Kyiv, Odessa and Sevastopol are very popular and can be booked through various tour operators.

Rail - Again, pre-booking through Intourist Travel Ltd in London is advised, as buying tickets is a difficult undertaking. Journeys are slow, though trains are more reliable than air travel in winter.

Road - Bus: There are services to most cities and towns although they are not always recommended due to overcrowding and uncleanliness. Taxi: Hiring a driver for a long-distance destination is a realistic option, costing about US$200 from Kyiv to Odessa or a similar journey. Car hire: Self-drive hire cars are gradually becoming more available. Traffic regulations: Speed limits are 60kph (37mph) in built-up areas, 90kph (55mph) in outside areas and 110kph (69mph) on the motorways. Traffic drives on the right; righthand-drive cars are prohibited. Drinking and driving is strictly prohibited. Heavy fines are imposed if traffic police smell alcohol on a drivers breath. Documentation: An International Driving Permit is necessary.

Advise against all but essential travel near the border with Azerbaijan (unresolved dispute over Nagorno Karabakh). This particularly covers the border areas of Tavush and Gegharkunic regions, where there is sporadic gunfire. In Tavush Marz we specifically advise against travel on the road from Ijevan to Noyemberyan (passes close to the border and military emplacements, and on the roads beyond Berd.
There is a low threat from terrorism. But you should be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks which could be in public areas, including those frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers. Check situation before visiting: Matenadaran manuscript library at the north end of Mesrop Mashtots Avenue, Yerevan. Around Freedom/Opera Square and Northern Avenue (rallies, marches, meetings).

The situation in Georgia, including Tbilisi, is now calmer. However, advise against all travel to the separatist regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Unless carrying out essential business, such as humanitarian work, advise against travel to any areas where troop deployments have been reported, in particular the towns of Poti, Senaki, Zugdidi and villages north of Gori.
Exercise caution if travelling along the M27 (also known as the M1), particularly around Gori. There remains a risk of local volunteer militia or criminal activity along this road. Also do not travel north from the M27 or west of the Georgian Military highway as there is also a risk of criminal or voluntary militia in the Akhalgori area.

Main lines: Marrakech-Casablanca-Rabat-Meknes-Fès-Oujda; / Marrakech-Casablanca-Rabat; / Marrakech-Casablanca-Meknes-Fès and Casablanca-Rabat-Tangier.
The railway connections between Morocco and Algeria remain closed. the Main international routes are from Oujda to Algiers.

COACH:
Bus:
The main centers are connected by a variety of bus services - many of which they are private. The two greater companies are CTM.ma (covering the whole country) and SATAS (between Casablanca, Agadir and the south of Agadir).
Urban Busses:
Connections between most towns and cities are frequent. Autobusses can be full and it is wise to buy ticket beforehand and to arrive enough time prior to departure to make sure a seat. Ticket prices are very low.
Taxi:
In the cities. Larger taxis (generally Mercedes) can be used for shorter trips between cities, but agree the fare before leaving.

BOAT:
The main ports are Tanger, Casablanca and Ceuta. Lines that serve these ports are Transtour, Trasmediterranea Company, Limadet, the Soft Line (Spain and Gibraltar), Polish Lines - Ocean and Nautilus (Spain and the U.S.A.) and Comanav. There are cheap and regular automobile ferries between Spain, Tanger and the Spanish enclaves in the North Moroccan coast. The routes are of Algeciras to Ceuta (Sebta); Algeciras to Tanger; Gibraltar to Tanger; Almeria to Melilla and Malaga to Melilla).

Avis and Hertz can give automobiles in Gibraltar or Tanger, Agadir Rabat or Casablanca. The price is generally expensive. Documentation: The Driving licences are accepted foreigner. It is obligatory the Insurance and the Green Card.

Domestic road travel
The main Moroccan highways - esp those of the N and NW - are in good conditions throughout the year. In the interior and S, conditions are good but can be difficult in winter - esp the Atlas mountains in winter.

However, Qantas and Singapore Airlines (in unison with partner BritishAirways.com) rallied to the challenge and also offer good deals now periodically. Cheaper deals sometimes obtainable with SE Asian airlines such as Korean, Garuda, Cathay, Vietnamese, Chinese etc.
Emirates vamped up its flight schedule to Australia Nov 2004 offering double services between Dubai and Sydney (via Singapore).
Big advantage with Emirates are the three 8hr stretches/breaks from the UK which help avoid DVT.

Following months of speculation that Virgin Blue was looking to set up an airline in South-East Asia, the airline is now in talks with Air Macau over a bid to service China from the former Portuguese enclave, Macau, best known for its casinos. The South China Morning Post reported Virgin was in talks for Air Macau to waive its 25-year concession as the territory's only home-based carrier. Air Macau only services nine of the 31 Chinese destinations to which it has flying rights and Macau Airport is keen to attract more passengers to the territory. Virgin said it was also looking at several options including expanding into India, despite the Indian Government barring any foreign ownership of airlines in the country.

Polynesianblue.com started Oct 05 (Initial promotion ‘Go See Samoa Fares’ fm $349 o.w. fm Sydney). Virgin Blue’s new joint venture airline, “Polynesian Blue” launched its first flight to Samoa Oct 05. The carrier is a partnership Virgin Blue and the Samoan Government to provide affordable flights from Australia and New Zealand to Samoa. Polynesian Blue will be the only airline offering budget flights between Australasia and Apia and will initially operate three direct flights per week between Apia and Sydney (We,Fr,Su) for A$ 349 incl and four between Apia and Auckland (Tu,We,Fr,Su) with Polynesian Blue’s special single launch fare offer of NZ$199 (plus taxes and charges). Bookings can also be make via VirginBlue and PacificBlue websites and cost about $100 more after the initial promotion finishes.

Jetstar Asia - QANTAS, Australia's biggest airline, said its new Singapore-based budget carrier Jetstar Asia would start flights by the end of 2004 as it awaited certification from the city-state's Government - Qantas Airways has been bitten by the low cost carrier bug with Apr 6, 2004 announcement it will start an Asian discount carrier in addition to its domestic offshoot Jetstar. The airline plans to fly to destinations within five hours of Singapore, an area that includes Shanghai, most of India, and might also include Perth.

The Territory of Christmas Island is a small territory of Australia located in the Indian Ocean, 2600 km (1600mls) NW of Perth in Western Australia, 500 km (300 mls) S of Jakarta, Indonesia, and 975 km ENE of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
It maintains about 1,600 residents who live in a number of "settlement areas" on the northern tip of the island: Flying Fish Cove (also known as Kampong), Silver City, Poon Saan and Drumsite.
Named in 1643 for the day of its discovery, the island was annexed and settlement began by the UK in 1888. Phosphate mining began in the 1890s. The UK transferred sovereignty to Australia in 1958. Almost two-thirds of the island has been declared a national park.

You can fly to Christmas Island (XCH) from either Perth (AWST=UTC+8, or AWDT +9) direct or through Cocos Islands (CCK) as well as direct from Kuala Lumpur (KUL). Obtaining a visa from most countries is now as easy as buying your ticket, your travel agent can assist you. Australian immigration information at immi.gov.au

The Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands, also called Cocos Islands and Keeling Islands, is a territory of Australia. There are two atolls and twenty-seven coral islands in the group. The islands are located in the Indian Ocean, about half way between Australia and Sri Lanka. The islands lie some 2750km NW of Perth, and 900km WSW of Christmas Island, its closest neighbour. Cocos lies approximately 12° south and 96.5° east, locating the islands in the humid tropical zone.

The reefs are two groups of small low-lying uninhabited tropical islands in the Indian Ocean situated on the edge of the continental shelf north-west of Australia and south of the Indonesian island of Roti at 12°14′S, 123°5′E.
Ashmore Reef is called Pulau Pasir by Indonesians, and considered part of Rote Ndao Regency of East Nusa Tenggara province. In the Rote Island language, it is called Nusa Solokaek. Both names have the meaning Sand Island.

As Ashmore is the closest point of Australian territory to Indonesia, it was a popular target for people smugglers transporting 'boat people' to Australia. Once they had landed on Ashmore, asylum seekers claimed to have entered Australian territory and requested to be processed as refugees.

Off the Queensland coast, the Coral Sea Islands - which lie to the E of the Great Barrier Reef and stretch from Osprey Reef (nr Cairns) to Cato Island on the Tropic of Capricorn (nr Gladstone) - are Australian territory; administered from Canberra by the Australian Attorney-General's Department. The islands became a territory of the Commonwealth under the Coral Sea Islands Act. In 1987, the Territory were extended to include Elizabeth and Middleton Reefs off Byron Bay, NSW.

Scattered over more than three-quarters of a million square kilometers of ocean, the Coral Sea Islands were declared a territory of Australia in 1969. They are uninhabited except for a small meteorological staff on the Willis Islets. Automated weather stations, beacons, and a lighthouse occupy many other islands and reefs. Lord Howe Island lies 600 kms (373 mls) due E of Port Macquarie, NSW and about 1/3 of the way to the northern tip of New Zealand. Along with Ball's Pyramid, it is administered by the Lord Howe Island Board in the state of New South Wales. It is not considered a Local Government Area and is therefore unincorporated (as is the Unincorporated Far West Region), but is self-governed by the Lord Howe Island Board.

The Lord Howe Island group was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1982 in recognition of its unique beauty and biodiversity. The Lord Howe Island Marine Park (commonwealth waters) protect the waters surrounding the island group.

Lord Howe Island was discovered on 17 Feb 1788 by HMS Supply, commanded by Lieutenant Henry Lidgbird Ball, RN, who was on his way from Botany Bay to Norfolk Island with convicts to start a penal settlement there. On his return journey in Mar 1788 he sent a party ashore on the island. It was uninhabited, and it seems that it had not been known to any of the Polynesian peoples of the South Pacific. Mount Lidgbird on the island and the nearby Ball's Pyramid are named after Ball. The island itself was named the 1st Earl of Howe (First Lord of the Admiralty).

Norfolk Island is 1610kms ENE of Sydney, 1456kms ESE of Brisbane, 1063kms NNW of Auckland and 772kms SE of Noumea. Norfolk Island is a volcanic outcrop 8km long and 5km wide. Two smaller uninhabited islands, Nepean and Phillip, lie to the south at a distance of 1km and 6km respectively.

About Norfolk Island
Two British attempts at establishing the island as a penal colony (1788-1814 and 1825-55) were ultimately abandoned. In 1856, the island was resettled by Pitcairn Islanders, descendants of the Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian companions.
Most of the 32km coastline consists of almost inaccessible cliffs, but the land slopes down to the sea in one small southern area on Sydney Bay, where the capital of Kingston is situated
Population: approx 2130. Ethnic groups: Descendants of the Bounty mutineers, Australian, New Zealander, Polynesian. 35% Anglican with 6 other religions represented.

Close to Stewart Island lie Codfish Island (close to the NW shore) and Big South Cape Island (off the SW tip).
The Titi (Muttonbird) Island groups are split and lie off the NE coast between Stewart Island and Ruapuke Island as well as next to Big South Cape Island (off the Sw coast).
Other islands of interest include Bench, Native, and Ulva Island, all close to the mouth of Paterson Inlet, and Pearl, Anchorage, and Noble Island, close to Port Pegasus in the SW.

Ruapuke Island, in the eastern approaches to Foveaux Strait, covers about 3,500 acres. It was formerly a local Maori stronghold supporting a population of about 200, whose chief was the famous Tuhawaiki. It was also the site of a mission station established by the Rev. J. F. H. Wöhlers in 1843. The island is of low relief and is swampy in places. There are several small, fresh or brackish lagoons separated from the sea by sand bars. Some forest remains, but most of the island is now either scrub or open land used for sheep grazing. Geologically it is composed of crystalline metamorphic and igneous rocks similar to those at Bluff and on the north-east corner of Stewart Island. The name means “two hills”.

The Solander Islands are a small chain of uninhabited volcanic islets lying at 46°34′S, 166°53′E, close to the western end of the Foveaux Strait in southern New Zealand. They lie 38km S of Prices Point (south coast of South Island), close where Lake Hakapoua drains through Big River to the Pacific Ocean due west of Te Waewae Bay, and 64 km WNW of the Putatara (Rugged) Point in the northwest of Stewart Island, or 56 km from Codfish Island west of Stewart Island. They measure about 0.7 km² in area. Administratively, they are part of Southland District.

A few thousand pairs of the southern subspecies of Buller's Albatross (Thalassarche b. bulleri) are commonly breeding on the islands. This subspecies is only found here and on The Snares. The flora is dominated by ferns and orchids. There are 53 vascular plant species, one third of which are very rare.

The archipelago of the Chatham Islands (Rekohu in the Moriori language and Wharekauri in the Māori language), is a territory of New Zealand and consists of about 10 islands within a 40-km radius. The remote islands, located over 800 kilometers east of southern New Zealand, have officially belonged to the country since 1842 and are part of the Canterbury state together with Christchurch. There are approx 700 people of main Chatham Island and 50 on Pitt.

Note that the requirement to have confirmed accommodation booked before arrival on the Chatham Islands applies to passengers disembarking from private vessels as well as passengers arriving on commercial vessels or flights.

Air Chathams operates between the Chatham Islands and Wellington (3pw) and Auckland and Christchurch (ea 1pw) utilising either twin engine Convair 580s or a Metroliner. Their site also informs where to stay and what to do.

The Kermadec Islands (Pop 0) are an island arc in the South Pacific Ocean and have been part of New Zealand since 1887.

The islands lie within 29°S to 31.5°S and 177°W to 179°W, 800–1000km NE of New Zealand's North Island, and a similar distance SW of Tonga. The centre of the Kermadec Islands group is located at approximately 29°16′37″S, 177°55′24″W.
The Kermadec trench is, at 10,047m, one of earth's deepest oceanic trenches and is continued northwards by the Tonga Trench - 10,882m (35702ft) deep at its deepest point and known as the Horizon Deep. In comparison The Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench is the deepest point in Earth's oceans - 10,924m (35840ft).

The archipelago contains the northernmost land and territorial seas in New Zealand. Raoul Island (Rangitahua) is by far the largest (2900ha) of the 15 islands, which are spread as four clusters in a line over 250 km of the Pacific Ocean, about 1100 km north-east of the Northland coast. The location can best be seen at Lib.uTexas.edu where the Kermadecs lie between New Zealand and Tonga. Although latitude West, the Kermadecs are in the same time zone as New Zealand (GMT+12)

A UNESCO World Heritage inscription for the Kermadec Islands includes: Raoul, Macauley, Curtis, Cheeseman, the Meyer Islands, and the other smaller islands of the group, and the large (748,000 hectares) Kermadec Islands Marine Reserve surrounding the islands. In the longer term, extensions to the site SSW along the Kermadec Ridge to include a representative group of seamounts and the active marine volcano, White Island are to be considered.

Both reserves are among the most strictly protected in New Zealand. The marine reserve encompasses a very wide range of underwater landforms and marine ecosystems. Past human occupation has modified the indigenous flora and fauna of the islands but in the last 15 years impressive rehabilitation progress has been made in the removal of weeds and pests from all the affected islands in the group.

While it is tricky to visit the islands, there are several cruises that go out to the remote region, offering a truly unique and spectacular trip around the islands. Travellers can either gaze at the passing island wildlife from the decks while listening to an informative staff, or go diving, and explore the reefs of the Kermadec Islands from beneath the water. The tours also boast views of dolphin and whale pods for the pleasure of their guests.
Most tours do land on Raoul Island for a time, allowing visitors to explore the area. There are several walks and historic landmarks of interest, and of course, stunning scenery unlike anything else in the world. Macauley Island, the second largest island in the Kermadecs, is home to the red crowned Kermadec parakeet offers clear views of the endemic bird.
While expensive, visits to the islands are sure to prove unique and memorable. Although there are not many facilities available on the islands, the cruise ships provide amenities as they sail around the distinct and fragile volcanic arc
